SSE Energy is part of OVO Energy (as of January 2020), and has regional brands SSE Southern Electric, SSE Scottish Hydro, SSE Atlantic, and SSE SWALEC. As part of the “Big Six,” they are the UK’s second biggest electricity and gas provider.
As part of the OVO family, SSE is in good company with other major energy suppliers, including Spark Energy and OVO energy, which is the UK’s top independent energy supplier. Together, the companies provide gas and electricity to over 5 million homes in the UK.
SSE Energy: Background
SSE has its base in Perth, Scotland and was founded in 1998. Its history dates back further, with the company originally in 1947 being called the Southern Electricity Board. The company’s name was later changed to Southern Electric.
Then, two decades ago, the company merged with Scottish Hydro. SSE today includes SWALEC, Atlantic and Airtricity.
OVO Energy gained SSE in early 2020 (January), which grew OVO’s reach for supplying gas and electricity to over 5 million UK households. While OVO has the right to utilize the SSE brand, customers won’t likely see any changes on the front end.
As of 2018, SSE Energy had 20,786 employees.

About the Warm Home Discount Scheme
SSE Energy is part of the government’s Warm Home Discount Scheme. If eligible, you can receive a £140 discount on your electricity bill (October-April). For businesses, your company is automatically eligible if you are part of the scheme and receive the Guarantee Credit element of Pension Credit, are low income, or receive specific means-tested benefits.
The Warm House Discount Scheme does not apply to the payment for wintertime fuel or cold weather payments.
