Spark Energy are a competitive energy service providing both gas and electricity to many satisfied clients across the UK. Launched in 2007 and based in Selkirk, Scottish Borders, they have an established history of continually satisfying their users. Not only do they offer these services, but have begun offering telephone, Sky TV and broadband contracts in the short-term. For this reason, many bundles exist and are appropriately tailored for each client.

In addition, Spark Energy’s proprietary app allows users to accurately measure and assess their bills, submit meter results, and secure their accounts. From there, they can also view statistics regarding their usage.

Despite their operating holder Spark Energy Supply LTD entering administration in late 2018, newly appointed OVO Energy managed to seamlessly take on over quarter-of-a-million accounts with care. OVO and Spark are still separate entities and run as such.

Spark Energy: Background

While proudly being formed in the Scottish Borders, Spark Energy was founded in 2007 by PJ Daring, an established and celebrated Canadian entrepreneur. His deep familiarity with the property management and utility markets afforded an innovative approach to establishing this brand, alongside esteemed co-founder Chris Gauld. As of now, they are proud to serve over 350,000 customer accounts and thus corresponding households.

Turning over their first profit in 2013, they then signed a deal with Morgan Stanley the following annum. A few short months later, Chris Gauld was appointed CEO after Darling, his co-founder, sold his stake in the company.

Unfortunately, slightly tumultuous circumstances were experienced in 2018, as the company ceased trading due to outstanding financial difficulties. This burden was largely felt thanks to the non-payment of up to £14 million as a penalty given by regulator Ofgem – under the Rewneables Obligations Scheme. This is the situation that prompted OVO Energy’s takeover of Spark Energy, retaining all assets including offices and employees. This move was appointed by Ofgem and has since been validated, as Spark Energy is now a separately traded brand under OVO’s umbrella, allowing seamless trading to continue.

As of now, they boast a 4.1 out of 5.0 star rating on Trustpilot thanks to almost 30,000 reviews. Additionally, they also offer certain discounts based on government subsidies, such as the Warm Home Discount Scheme, in which up to a £140 discount can be found between October and April for eligible parties. To that extent, it’s worth seeing what your options may be.
